Director of Collections and Public Engagement

Location: Dorset County Museum, High West Street, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 1XA

Salary: £35,000 pa

Full-Time, 3 Year Fixed Term Contract

Dorset County Museum is one of the leading independent, charitable, heritage organisations in the South West of England. Its diverse collections contain over 4 million objects, including internationally significant geology, archaeology and literary artefacts, and the Museum is visited by over 50,000 visitors a year.

At this moment the Museum is at an exciting and pivotal moment in its 170 year history having recently become an ACE National Portfolio Organisation as part of the Wessex Museums Partnership as well as securing a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is therefore embarking on a £15.4 million capital expansion project to construct the innovative, visitor-focused ‘Tomorrow’s Museum for Dorset’. This will completely reimagine the Museum - its galleries, exhibitions, storage facilities, working spaces and retail offer - to produce an organisation able to better conserve and interpret Dorset’s internationally significant heritage and be ready to meet the expectations of modern visitors.

This is an opportunity for the right candidate to help create a major new regional museum of the natural sciences, archaeology, history, literature and art. The post will lead and help create the new Collections and Public Engagement Division, which is being developed over the next two years. It will be an exciting time to help shape this department, secure the future for this significant collection and make it accessible to new audiences.

Application is by CV with a full covering letter explaining why you feel you are a suitable candidate for this extremely important role.

  • Closing Date for Applications: 31st August 2018
