As part of the Dorset AONB, South Dorset Ridgeway's 'Festival of Discovery', starting on Saturday 16 June and running up to and including Sunday 24 June, all entry to the Dorset County Museum will be free.

During the weekends of the festival, visitors will be met by a Roman Soldier and transported back in time to 43AD when Durnovaria (now Dorchester) was an important outpost of the Roman empire.

The museum’s unique collection of artefacts includes 12 stunning Roman mosaics, each with their own unique design depicting gods, goddesses and sea beasts from over 2000 years ago. The collection also includes numerous archaeological discoveries from in and around the County that portray everyday Roman life.

In addition to showcasing their fascinating collection of historic finds the Museum will be offering a number of activity for all ages bringing to life local ancient myths and legends in a fun, exciting and captivating set of events.

From Saturday 16th June, visitors are welcome to explore this period of history by immersing in an ancient extravaganza by Cohor I Durotriga Re-enactment Group. Performing over two weekends (16th – 17th and 23rd – 24th June) the group will wow audiences as they travel back in time to Roman ‘Durnovaria’ in a set of live historic demonstrations of Roman domestic and military life.

During the week visitors wishing to explore more about the Romans are invited to join our Museum Tour Guide on Monday 18 June, Wednesday 20 June and Friday 22 June for a tour of the Museum’s collection of archaeological artefacts and displays and on Wednesday 20th June from 10.30pm to 1pm a drop-in ID surgery will give visitors an opportunity to bring in objects they have found - coins, buckles, pottery, anything! Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen, Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme will be on hand to identify them and to explain what they are.
