Dorset County Museum to Hit the Road

As part of its £14.9 million redevelopment, Dorset County Museum will soon be hitting the road with its unique ‘Pop Up’ Museum. By taking to the road, the Museum will visit communities across the county, giving them a unique insight and up-close experience of what the future Museum will look like. People will be able to experience some of the treasures from the Museum’s collection and have an opportunity to say what they would like to see in their future Museum.

This ambitious tour coincides with the temporary closure of the Museum as it undergoes its long-anticipated transformation entitled ‘Tomorrows Museum for Dorset’.

The tour begins on October 1st with an exciting collaboration with Brewery Square in Dorchester and will continue till February 2019 when it will travel around the county.

“We have some fantastic plans for our Pop-Up Museums and are in conversations about some great locations for the remainder of the tour. We are looking forward to announcing these details nearer the time” says, Jon Murden Museum Director. “We know from our experience with Dippy just how excited the public are about our ancient past and Dorset’s role in helping to shape and share our understanding of science and the natural world and we can’t wait to get this show on the road. We want to continue the ‘Dippy Effect’ making the Museum fun and engaging for all ages. There will be creative spaces for children and families to relax and enjoy a range of activities.”

Tour dates and venues will be published on the Museum website and announced in the local press.

The Museum formally closes on the 1st October 2018 but before then, visitors have a unique opportunity to visit and oversee the archaeological excavations currently taking place as part of the Museum’s redevelopment.

“I think we’re pretty unique in having our very own Roman Road running directly under the building", says Jon, "visitors are welcome to pop along and see for themselves just how meticulous we are when it comes to discovering and preserving our local history.”

Information on opening times, exhibitions and meeting the archaeological experts are available on the museum’s website

Tomorrows Museum for Dorset reopens in the summer of 2020, information regarding the plans and details about its long-term objectives can be found at www.tomorrowsmuseumfordorset.org
